Dielines are one of the most searched but least clearly explained topics in packaging design. Here are answers to the 20 most common dieline questions — from what a dieline is to how to generate one free.
General Dieline Questions
What is a dieline?
A dieline is the flat 2D template of a box or package. It shows every cut, fold, score and glue area of the packaging spread flat. Designers apply artwork to the dieline; manufacturers use it to cut and fold the packaging material.
What is a dieline also called?
Dielines are also called: die cut template, cut line template, structural template, packaging template, net (in structural engineering), box layout, and cut and crease template.
What is the difference between a dieline and a mockup?
A dieline is a flat 2D template used for artwork placement and manufacturing. A mockup is a 3D visualisation used for presentations and client approval. The dieline is sent to the printer; the mockup is not.
What is the difference between a cut line and a fold line on a dieline?
Cut lines show where the material will be physically cut — they define the outer shape and any internal cuts. Fold lines (score lines) show where the material will be scored and folded to create box panels. Cut lines are usually solid; fold lines are usually dashed.
What is bleed on a dieline?
Bleed is extra artwork that extends beyond the cut line — typically 3mm. It accounts for slight variations in cutting position, ensuring no white edges appear on the finished product after cutting.
What is a safe zone on a dieline?
The safe zone (also called the live area) is the area inside the cut line where all important artwork — logos, text, key images — must remain. Typically 4–5mm inside the cut line. Artwork outside the safe zone risks being cut off.
Technical Dieline Questions
What units are used for dielines?
Millimetres (mm) are the industry standard for packaging dielines globally. Some tools also support inches. Always confirm with your printer which unit system they use.
What is fold allowance (material thickness compensation)?
When thick board is folded, the outer surface travels a longer distance than the inner surface. Fold allowance accounts for this: add the material thickness to each folded edge dimension. For 0.5mm board, add 0.5mm to each fold.
What software is used to create dielines?
The most common: Adobe Illustrator (industry standard), CorelDraw, AutoCAD, and dedicated packaging software like ArtiosCAD, Esko and CAPE. Free browser tools like Diegen by Aprints.pk eliminate the need for specialist software.
What file format should a dieline be in?
AI (Adobe Illustrator native) is the most common. PDF/X-1a for universal print compatibility. DXF for CNC cutting machines. SVG for browser-based tools. Always check with your printer which format they require.
What colours should cut lines and fold lines be on a dieline?
Use Spot Colours — never CMYK process colours. Common conventions: cut lines = magenta or red spot, fold lines = blue spot, glue tabs = yellow spot or hatching. Spot colours are removed by the printer before printing artwork — CMYK colours would print onto the box.
How do I calculate tuck flap dimensions?
Standard formula: tuck flap depth = (box width ÷ 2) − 5mm. Dust flaps: (box depth ÷ 2) − 2mm. A dieline generator like Diegen calculates these automatically.
Free Dieline Generator Questions
Is there a free dieline generator with no login?
Yes. Diegen by Aprints.pk is 100% free with no login required. Enter dimensions, select box type, download. No account, no payment, no watermarks.
Can I use a free dieline for commercial projects?
Yes. Dielines generated with Diegen are royalty-free and can be used for any commercial packaging project.
Does a free dieline generator produce professional quality output?
Yes — if the tool calculates fold allowances and uses correct structural formulas. Diegen is built by Aprints.pk, a professional printing company, so the calculations follow industry standards.
What box types can I generate with Diegen?
Tuck end boxes, mailer boxes, retail cartons and more. Open Diegen to see all available box types.
Can I get my dieline printed after generating it?
Yes. After designing your artwork on the dieline, you can order printing from Aprints.pk — Pakistan’s leading custom packaging printer, shipping nationwide with COD. WhatsApp 0331-1146549 for a quote.
What is the difference between a dieline and a template?
In packaging, the terms are often used interchangeably. Technically, a template is a pre-made, standard-size dieline; a dieline can be any custom structure. A dieline generator creates custom dielines; a template library offers pre-sized standard options.
How long does it take to create a dieline with a free online tool?
With Diegen — under 2 minutes. Enter dimensions, click generate, download. No experience needed.
What is a die in printing and packaging?
A die is the physical steel cutting tool used by a die-cutting machine to cut and crease packaging material. It is custom-made to match the dieline template. The dieline is the design; the die is the physical tool made from that design.
