Tuck End Box Dieline – Straight vs Reverse Tuck Guide & Free Generator

The tuck end box is the world’s most widely used retail packaging structure — from pharmaceutical boxes and cosmetic cartons to toy packaging and food boxes. If you’ve held a product in a retail store, it was almost certainly in a tuck end box. This guide covers tuck end box dielines, the difference between straight and reverse tuck, and how to generate a tuck end dieline free.

What Is a Tuck End Box?

A tuck end box is a folding carton where the top and/or bottom are closed by tuck flaps that insert into the box opening. No glue is needed for closure — the friction of the tucked flap holds the box closed. The box is typically glued only on one side panel (the manufacturer’s joint) during production.

Straight Tuck End (STE) vs Reverse Tuck End (RTE)

Feature Straight Tuck End (STE) Reverse Tuck End (RTE)
Top tuck direction Toward front panel Toward front panel
Bottom tuck direction Toward front panel (same as top) Toward back panel (opposite)
Material waste Less — better nesting on sheet Slightly more material
Closure strength Standard Stronger — opposite directions create more friction
Cost Slightly lower Slightly higher
Best for Lightweight retail products Heavier products needing secure closure

Tuck End Box Dieline Dimensions — What You Need

To generate a tuck end box dieline, you need three measurements:

  • Width (W) — the front face of the box
  • Depth (D) — the side/spine of the box
  • Height (H) — the top to bottom measurement

Also needed: board/paper thickness — this is used to calculate fold allowances. Standard folding carton board is 0.3–0.5mm (300–500 micron).

Tuck Flap Dimensions

The tuck flap depth (how far it tucks inside the box) should be:

  • Minimum: Width ÷ 2 minus 3–5mm (allows the flap to be inserted without buckling)
  • Standard: Width ÷ 2 minus 5mm
  • Dust flaps (the narrow side flaps at top and bottom): Depth ÷ 2 minus 2mm
